Ricky Begaye, Program Coordinator for Canyon Country Discovery Center/Canyon Country Youth Corps(CCYC), has been with CCYC for more than seven years working side by side with AmeriCorps members developing leadership and job skills.
Ricky grew up on the Navajo Reservation – the middle child of seven. At the age of sixteen, he joined a conservation youth crew building trails and doing restoration work for two consecutive summer seasons. After high school Ricky joined the adult program where he was a member for another two seasons on a backcountry riparian restoration crew. From there he advanced to crew leader passing down the skills he had learned during his four Americorps conservation seasons. Having grown with the Canyon Country Youth Corps, Ricky built a deep understanding and commitment to the program and stepped into the role for Program Coordinator.
Season after season, campfire after campfire, hitch after hitch, Ricky had also been working on starting a non-profit on the Navajo Reservation with his co-worker/co-leader to help families grow their own food and work with local schools and youth. The non-profit is still in the planning phase.
In Ricky’s free time he crafts – crocheting, knitting, weaving, drawing, and painting. During full moons he enjoys night riding or hiking. Ricky is also an avid baker and creative cook. Being passionate and motivated, he is looking to the future for opening up his own Coffee Bakery Restaurant or a food truck traveling state to state.
