Outdoor Rural Toolkit Chris Perkins, Senior Director at the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR), will present on the ORR Rural Economic Development Toolkit. The toolkit, which was created through interviews with over 60 rural economic development and outdoor recreation advocates, will help you build your community’s outdoor recreation economy by recognizing your assets and considering the challenges you may face. Audience takeaways: Perkins will walk through the toolkit in an interactive session to help participants learn about steps they can take as a rural community to build their outdoor recreation economy (whether their community is new to this or not). This session will focus on helping the audience think about the “you-don’t-know-what-you-don’t-know” aspects of building an outdoor recreation economy, grounded in real-life examples. Crafting a Community-Led Vision for Regional Recreation Management in Greater Zion Managing resources and visitors in high-demand outdoor recreation areas in Utah remains an ongoing challenge to ensure the best possible visitor experience and local community health and quality of life. Solutions to trip planning, visitor experience, dispersal, mobility, and economic opportunity require regional collaboration and resources beyond what individual recreation destinations can offer.

Greater Zion Landscape stakeholders are embarking on a regional recreation management strategy in an effort to craft a shared, community-led vision that addresses recreational demands in a manner that stewards resources effectively. Learn about this recreation planning effort in real time from partners crafting a regional strategy that identifies priority infrastructure investments, seeks financial leverage, and explores new economic models for sustainable revenue generation for the outdoor economy.
