My name is Benjamin Rae and I currently serve as Assistant Leisure Services Director for Washington City. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University in 2003 and my Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Southern Utah University in 2017. Most of my professional career has been spent in aquatics which I have a great passion for. I was an assistant swimming coach at Brigham Young University from 2002-2005, at Utah Valley Aquatics and Springville High School from 2005-2006, at Dynamo Swim Club (Atlanta) from 2006-2011, and as the inaugural Head Coach from Dixie State University from 2015-2018. While I had visions of coaching in many areas of the country, family ties have brought me back to my hometown in southern Utah. It is an amazing place to live and raise a family.
I have served in many leadership and civic groups throughout my professional career including Corporate Alliance, American Red Cross Disaster Team, the St George Area Chamber of Commerce, Age Group Chair on the Utah Swimming Board of Directors and Meet Director for 2013 Short Course Age Group State Championships, and Southern Region Representative for the Utah Recreation and Parks Association (2017-Current). I also have memberships and training within the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA), Aquatic Facility Operator Certification, USA Swimming, American Swimming Coaches Association, College Swimming Coaches Association of America, the Healthy Dixie Committee, Youth Services Coalition, and 2014-2015 Utah Recreation and Parks Association Leadership Academy Graduate. Finally, I was chosen as the 2011 North Atlanta Swimming Association Coach of the Year and the 2012 Washington City Employee of the Year – I am very proud of these two professional awards.
While I have had great opportunities in the recreation field, my greatest priority is my own family. I have a wife and 3 children ages 14, 12, and 10 who love to be outside and participate in any activity they can find. Outside of work, some of my funnest times are found coaching sports teams for my kids, gardening, and serving in my church. Without the support of my family, none of my professional accomplishments would mean much to me. That fact alone was the major contributing factor in returning to southern Utah where I felt that I would have a greater work-family balance.
I absolutely love working for Washington City. Everyday is new and exciting! I have the opportunity to work with local businesses, residents and surrounding cities. I have a great management team and feel fortunate to be in the position that I am in. The swimming pools, basketball courts, meeting rooms, group exercise classes, preschool, rock wall and reception center have hosted tournaments, meetings and weddings for thousands of people in our community and will continue to do so for tens of thousands of people in the years to come. Keeping this facility running smoothly, efficiently and productively is my primary goal. It is my pledge to keep this Community Center safe, clean, affordable and fun for everyone!”
